MASTER THESIS:

A CRITIQUE ON ABSURDITY: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL CLARIFICATION OF ONTOLOGY (2016)

ABSTRACT:

Contained in this thesis is logical proof that the existentialist claim, existence comes prior to essence, is fundamentally flawed. By examining both existence and essence phenomenologically, I will demonstrate that the premises of the existentialist argument is bias, and therefore, their conclusion that man is entirely free is nothing more than subjective partiality; or rather, opinion merely and not fact. From this truth I will offer conjecture, through Albert Camus’ work The Myth of Sisyphus and his ideas on the absurdity of existence. This absurdity analogized with Sisyphus helps demonstrate that the essence of existence is indifference to the participants in existence, or simply put, objective; however, man subjectively understands existence, as he is conscious of the underlying laws which necessarily define existence itself. Consciousness, or our understanding of existence, is subjective. Congruently, man’s understanding of existence, otherwise referred to as ontology, is always phenomenological.

To accomplish the previous, I will first demonstrate that ontology is inseparable from phenomenology, as being is understood in relation to anyone’s own individual experiences with the attributes of existence. Beyond doubt it will be demonstrated that essence is innate within existence. Ultimately, I will demonstrate that existence is best defined with the underlying attribute, choice. Volition will be proven and then presented as a solution to the dilemma of absurdity. Better stated, ontology, or existence, is phenomenological, or subjective.
